Yesterday's Den Meeting

We had a great den meeting on Sunday. We dug in and got dirty planting a peach tree in the Arasin's backyard, talked about why trees are good and then learned about the planets in our solar system. Thanks to the Arasins for hosting and to Avery for coming up with the space elective and leading the interplanetary discussion.

A couple of announcements I wanted everybody to have.

1) Homework - While the weather is still good, work with your son to accomplish achievement 12c, 12d, or 12e. Just one is necessary, provided you're planning to participate in at least one camping trip this year.

2) Which brings me to Fall Family Camping. We're calling FFC our mid-October den meeting. If you're planning to go, please get your money into Rebecca Woody by Wednesday.

3) And since FFC is our next den meeting, we need a denner. Cole Reynolds will be that denner, and his assignment is to come up with a skit that we can perform for the pack, probably on Friday night.

4) Popcorn money is due Oct. 15. Make checks payable to Pack 797, and give them to me.

5) Finally, add this to the calendar. The Pack will do some semi-annual maintenance at Mt. Bethel Elem. Habitat on Nov. 8 in the afternoon. It meets a requirement for Bear, 6g. Look for additional details later.

Getting into the Swing of Things

We had a fine den meeting today. The boys showed off their newly acquired tennis skills. Thanks to Hammond for teaching the boys how to play tennis. That counted toward part of our Sports achievement.

Kudos to Christopher for kicking off the denner program by combining the four forces of flight with Simon Sez. And thanks to Jacob for sharing his experiences as a Cub Scout in Germany with the den.

The deadline for registering for Fall Family Camping is Oct. 3 - which means you need to have your money into Rebecca Woody before that. You will also need to have turned in your health form, just parts A-C. No doctor signature necessary.

Deadline for popcorn is Oct. 15, with money and prize selection turned into Ethan Milley. The delivery day is Nov. 7.

Our next den meeting is at the Arasin's house. We're going to start late - 4 p. - to avoid a conflict they have. Avery is also the denner, and the Arasins are responsible for snack.

Sunday's Den Meeting

Just a quick post to remind you of Sunday's den meeting and to alert you to a location change. Rather than the Reynolds house, we'll meet nearby at their community tennis courts at 3 pm.

From Woodlawn, enter the Hampton Woods subdivision next to Dickerson Middle School onto Chestnut Lake. Swim and Tennis parking is on the right, after the 5th stop sign.

From Fairfield, enter the neighborhood onto Hampton Woods Drive. Make your first right onto Chestnut Lake, and parking will be on the left.

Bring a tennis racket if you have one. Pack or Cub Scout T-shirts are the uniform.

Thank you everybody for making the first meeting of the year a real success, particularly the willingness to take nine boys to Publix on short notice. The boys showed real ability when it comes to grocery shopping.

You son's homework assignment is to watch a televised sporting event with a parent. Please mark it in Scout Track when you've completed it.

Also in Scout Track, please double check your information to make sure its complete and accurate. It makes getting you information easier and helps us with the records we have to file with BSA.

Look for a seperate message from me with the schedule in it. It shows the dates as well as snack and denner responsiblities as well as the location. It also shows what we plan to cover at each meeting, but as today shows us plans will change. The second and third sheets (its in Excel) have the Bear requirements and achievements. What is most important to know is that we will cover 8 achievements in den meetings - #6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 23, 24. There will be some homework assignments. You need to do four achievements at home.

Next den meeting is Sunday, Sept. 13, at 3 p. We'll meet at the Reynolds' house, 4493 Ashburn Walk. Bring a tennis racket and be prepared to play. Christopher Euston is denner - which means he will prepare an elective for us to work on - and Euston will bring the snack.

Other key dates are Sept. 12 is the East Cobber Parade. If you'd like to march in it, meet the Pack at Mt. Bethel Elementary at 9:30 a.m.

Fall Family Camping is Oct. 16-18. The Space Derby is Oct. 24. Buy your Space Derby kit at the Scout Shop or www.scoutstuff.org.

Bike Hike on the Silver Comet Trail

On Sunday, we're taking a Bike Hike down the Silver Comet trail. We could ride all the way to Alabama, but we're not gonna do that. Instead, we're going to ride only a few miles - about 30 minutes west, take a break to do some den business, and then 30 minutes back to the cars.

Let's plan on meeting at the Floyd Road enterance to the trail. A map with directions from my house is here. There is a parking lot on the west side of Floyd Road, on the south side of the bike path. It's not the closest trail enterance, but I am told that it will be a lot less congested.

Be sure to bring a bike helmet and water. Boys should wear a Pack or Cub Scout t-shirt. I am responsible for snack this time out. I will select a random 3rd grader to lead the flag ceremony.

Getting Started for a New Year

I don't know about you, but I'm getting excited about the upcoming Cub Scout year. Keith and I have been working on a great plan and have plenty of "fun with a purpose" in store for you and your son.

The schedule of Den Meetings for the year is here. It has the date, the location, snack responsibility and a new column called Denner, which is like being junior assistant Den Leader. Each boy will be responsible for planning a den activity (not the whole meeting) for each time he's Denner. We can talk about this in greater detail at our first meeting.

Which, by the way, is August 30. We are going to bike a part of the Silver Comet Trail. When the date gets closer, I'll get you the details. Just know you'll need a bike and a helmet and a bottle of water.

Details for Camping Trip This Weekend

I wanted to get everybody some details on this weekend's camping trip to McFarlane Nature Park, figuratively right in your own backyard. This is an 11.5 acre preserve owned by the Cobb Land Trust and home for the efforts of master gardeners. There are wooded trails and big, open fields, a campfire ring and picnic shelter. They do ask that we not play in the garden.

The plan: Show up after lunch on Saturday, June 6. We'll play some ultimate frisbee (if you have one, bring it), check out the trails and generally run around the place. We'll have a campfire and lights out by 10 p.m. It is literally in somebody's backyard (just not yours) so we do need to be considerate of the neighbors.

In the morning, we will have breakfast and break camp. We'll jump in the cars and drive down to the Sope Creek park - about 2 miles - where we will tackle the hiking trails to the mill ruins, have lunch and then walk out. You'll be home in time for the Braves game or whatever chores have been planned for you.

The place: McFarlane Nature Park is on Farm Road, just off Paper Mill Road. From Johnsons Ferry, head down Paper Mill. Turn Left at Gateside Place, which is across the street from the entrance to the NASA soccer park. Go about 50 feet and turn right onto Farm Road. Here's a map. If you get to ACC, you have gone too far.

At the end of the road, park in the field to the left of the farm house. We're camping in the field to the right of the farm house, with the picnic shelter.

The menu: Afternoon snack; burgers and dogs for dinner; smores; eggs, fruit and cereal for breakfast; and PB&J and fruit for lunch.

The costs: I will collect from each family for the food, plus a $1 donation for the park. You will need $3, exact change, to park at Sope Creek.

One last thing: As I mentioned, there is some serious gardening going on here and there is a small apiary. It is surrounded by a fence and signs. Nevertheless, if you or your son are allegeric to bee stings, bring an epipen.

May 23 Flag Placement Ceremony

On Saturday, May 23, we'll be participating in the annual flag placement at Marietta National Cemetery. It's moving tribute to America's fallen soldiers, including people from wars reaching back to the Civil War. I hope to see you there.

Uniformed Scouts - that means Class As - will be given flags to place in front of each grave; then step back and salute the flag and the grave. Each scout who participates will receive a
community service patch, provided by the National Memorial Day Association of Georgia.

Registration begins at 8:00 am at the cemetery entrance, located at 500 Washington Ave., Marietta, GA. Look for the Pack 797 sign. A brief program will begin at 8:30 am and concludes with the placement of the flags. There is no registration fee. Parking is available at the Cobb County Main Library, which is across the street from the cemetery.

It will be over by 10 a.m.

GT Baseball Details

Here are the details for the GT vs. FSU baseball game for Wolf Den 4 – Pack 797 – this Friday, 5/8/09:

- Have the kids in their “Class A” uniforms with shirts tucked in and scarves on (for when they are on TV)!
- Everyone should arrive by 5:00pm for the 7:00pm game.
- Meet at the Will Call Ticket Window which is by the main entrance to the stadium.
- The Will Call window will NOT be open, but I will be there at 5:00pm sharp with tickets in hand.
- We will tour the press box and meet our announcers – Wes Durham & Randy Carroll
- If the locker-room is descent, we may get to see where the players get ready for the game.
- We will then, as a group, walk out to the production truck and see the production team preparing for the telecast.
- We will grab a hot dog and drink and head to our seats before 7:00pm.
- During the game, I can walk one or two at a time out to the truck to see the production in action.
- The kids should bring their baseball gloves for foul balls and any autographs they might get.
- If they have any signs, they should be big, bold, colorful, and easy to read – the network is SportSouth (not Fox).
- We will designate an early inning for the kids to wave at a camera and be on TV.
- Game could last until 10:00pm, so everyone should feel free to leave at any time.

Some notes regarding the teams and the game:
- GT is 2nd in the Coastal Division in the ACC – 9th in the country
- for GT: Luke Murton is their big hitter right now – batting .394 with 15 HRs
- FSU is 1st in the Atlantic Division – 16th in the country
- for FSU: Mike McGee is their big hitter – batting .366 with 14 HRs
- This is a very good rivalry – should be a good game.

Future Senators of America

Yorktown Fotos

At long last, some long awaited images from our trip to the Yorktown.

The Yorktown is in the background, while members of the den are in the foreground. I believe Keith is reciting lines from Apocalypse Now.

The first thing we did was check into our luxurious accommodations. Four racks high, about 22 inches apart and a few inches shorter than your average Hammond Reynolds.

The ladies who came along on this trip fared much better, according to rumors, staying in the Chief Petty Officers quarters with private bunks.

Some people thought it was a great idea ...

... while a few wondered what they had gotten themselves into.

After checking into the boat, we boarded a ferry to Ft. Sumter, which is in more less the condition the Union Army left it in following the war. It's basically a pile of rocks. This image is taken from the top of a concrete battery installed during WWII to hold really big guns.

And here are a couple of intrepid Cubs posing next to a Civil War era cannon. It's cool.

Bears are a Different Animal

Now that all the boys have received their Wolf badges, we're ready to start thinking about earning our Bears. I'm sure you're a little Cub Scouted out, but the long car and airplane rides are a good time to get some of the work done. Or, how's this one: "Mom, I'm bored."

Keith Anderson and I have already started planning next year's program and I think its going to be a good one. We are going to earn our Bears, some arrow points, the Whittlin' Chip and the Leave No Trace award on environmental awareness, plus build (at least start) some righteous Pinewood Derby Cars. Plus I updated the blog with a new image.

Earning the Bear is different than earning the Wolf. To understand what to expect, you need to read this message. The Bear program is designed to give boys a chance to explore their interests. While Wolves complete 12 of 12 requirements, Bears must complete 12 of a possible 24 requirements.

Naturally, there is a twist. The requirements are broken into four sections, each with a specific number that must be finished. Each boy must complete just 1 of the 2 "God" requirements, 3 of the 5 "Country" requirements, 4 of the 6 "Family" requirements and 4 of the 11 Self requirements.

Like this last year, we are going to do a lot of the work in den meetings but not all of it. Keith and I have decided we will tackle 8 achievements in den meetings, leaving 4 for you to do at home. There will also be some homework, just as there was last year.

Here are the ones we'll tackle at Den Meetings:

#6 - Take Care of Your Planet (some of you have already completed part of this one)
#7 - Law Enforcement is a Big Job
#12 - Family Outdoor Adventures
#13 - Saving Well Spending Well
#14 - Ride Right (we've done most of this one already!)

#23 - Sports, Sports, Sports (you'll love the homework assignment on this one)
#24 - Be a Leader

Shavings and Chips (#19) is about using a pocket knife safely and completing it includes earning the Whittlin' Chip, a pocket card. I'm planning to do this in January or early February. I'm also planning to give my boys pocket knives for Christmas. It's also worth noting that pocket knives aren't allowed on Pack camping trips, or in airports.

We'll see you a couple of more times this year and Keith and I are always around if you have questions.

Den Campout June 6-7

We are squared away to do an overnight camp out at McFarlane Nature Park on June 6-7. McFarlane Nature Park is an 11.5 acre park off Paper Mill Road, just a few minutes from where you live.

Here's a vague plan, so I'm definitely open to suggestions. Have lunch at home then come on over to the park. We'll set up camp, play some frisbee and work on a belt loop, maybe the one for mathmatics. Cook up a little hobo stew for dinner, followed by campfire stories and sack out by 10 p.m. (No kidding, the camp is surrounded by a neighborhood.) In the morning, we'll send the kids over the the neighbors to rustle up some eggs for breakfast, then pack up. At that point, we'll hike over to Sope Creek, have a simple lunch on the ruins and be home in time to watch the Braves game.

I'm looking forward to it. Let me know if you're going.

May 11 Picnic

Several of you asked me about the details about our Bridging Ceremony and Picnic coming up on May 11. It will run from 6 p. to 8 p. at East Cobb Park near the stage. Don't be too late, because we plan to eat first and then have our program at 7 p.m. This is a family event.

Bridging is the promotion from Wolves to Bears and we've worked hard to make it fun.

You don't need to bring a thing, maybe a chair or a blanket if sitting is your thing, but you do need to let me know if you will be there. Soon, like right now. It only takes a second.

First off, I'm very proud of each of the boys for earning their Wolf badges this year. It took a lot of hard work. It was no gimme.

Each boy also earned at least one arrow point - a gold one - and maybe one or two silver arrow points.

All of these badges need to be sewn on the uniform. Here's the insignia guide to let you know where they all go. The insignia guide is always in the links on this blog.

I've discovered that the dry cleaner and the Scout Shop are both capable of handling this little chore, though the dry cleaner has no clue where the badges should go.

Sunday activity

I forgot to mention this in my last note on upcoming activities, but don't forget the Mt. Bethel Habitat Spring Cleaning on Sunday. Mt. Bethel is lucky to have a great outdoor resource like that and depends on the school community to keep it in good shape. For the pack, its a great way to give back to the school that supports us.

The clean up happens from 1 p. to 4 p. Please come for all of or part of it and wear your unnaturally green Pack 797 t-shirt.

It's a great way to give back to your school and get a jumpstart on next year's Rank Achievements. This service project meets requirements for rising Bears (6g).

Beesball

Hammond Reynolds asked me to get a headcount on how many people are planning to go to the Friday May 8 Georgia Tech baseball game versus Florida State. It's a popular game and Mr. Hammond needs to secure tickets. Send me responses ASAP.

The game starts at 7 p., but we'll want to get there early to tour the television production truck.

This trip, by the way, can be used to satisfy two Bear requirements.

Next and Last Den Meetings

A week from tonight, Monday, April 27, we have our April Pack Meeting. I would like to have a brief Den Meeting meeting before that, beginning at 6:15 p.m. at St. Peter and St. Paul.

We have several boys who have earned their fourth Wolf beads and I want to recognize them. Also, I learned why Benjamin Franklin's portrait hangs in the State Capitol. It has nothing to do with the fact that he invented bifocals - which is what our tour guide would have had us believe.

And then the last den meeting for the year is Friday, May 8 at Georgia Tech's baseball stadium. We'll take in a ball game and maybe even end up on TV. Look for more details on that closer to the date.

Tuesday's Capitol Tour

I hope everybody had a fine Spring Break and Easter holiday, getting outside, going exciting places, having good old fashioned family fun.

On Tuesday, April 14, we are touring the State Capitol. The tour begins at 2 p.m., and we need to be at the tour desk, in full Class A uniform, by about 1:50 p.m.

I've had a couple of parents who have offered to drive. Let's meet at the Euston's house at 1 p. and we can carpool down there. It's important to be timely because parking is a few blocks away.

The tour lasts about an hour. I'll take care of the snack following the tour.

Something's Fishy

Just a reminder about Saturday's den meeting and some additional details.

This week, our meeting is Saturday April 4 at 1 p. for a tour of the Buford Fish Hatchery in Cumming. The tour begins at 1 p.m. This will be a good trip for boys who want to rack up electives or belt loops - or are just interested in where trout come from - but we aren't going to tackle any requirements.

Bring fishing rods and worms if you like. The pond has catfish, bluegill and bream. Adults need fishing licenses (if they are fishing) but kids do not. All fishing is catch and release.

Yee Haw - Bike Rodeo

Great meeting! We showed off our bicycle skills, and rode around like the Wild Bunch. The best part, we're started to work on our Bear achievements. Congratulations to Alex, Avery and Christopher who finished their Wolf requirements, along with Grant who earned his fourth bead a few weeks ago.

Please show up 10 minutes early for tomorrow's Pack Meeting to get ready for the flag ceremony.

Our next Den meeting is Saturday April 4 - the first Saturday of Spring Break - at 1 p. for a tour of the Buford Fish Hatchery. It's about a 45 minute drive, according to Google. Scouting for Food

You probably just received an email from Cubmaster Morey a few minutes ago about Scouting for Food. Let me just add my two cents to say this is a great project, and its even more important in this economy.

It won't take much time. Your neighbors will be happy to pitch in. And the drop off centers are close by, particularly Mt. Zion church, which is the white church across the street from St. Peter and St. Paul.

Remember - a bag of canned goods, dropped off at one of the three collection points by Saturday, March 21, between 12 noon and 4 p.

Aye Aye Cap'n!

What a great trip to the Yorktown - my kids are already asking when they can go back. I guess the sea is in their blood. And a great big thanks to Todd Wilson, who ably captained the whole Pack for the trip. Not a single body was lost overboard.

I hope you had as a great a time as we did. If you want to send me your pictures, I'll post them in a future blog entry.

And now to look forward. At the next den meeting - Sunday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m. at the Euston's, we're going to pull something out of the Bear book to do. Technically, you can't get credit for completing Bear activities until after you complete your Wolf. But that's technically.

Jack Wilson will be leading the flag ceremony. Also, the Wilson's have snack. I'll be handing out beads, so get your achievements marked down in Scout Track. Cub Scout t-shirts are the attire.

Don't forget there is a Pack meeting Monday, March 23. It's 6:30 p. at SPSP.

See Your Government at Work

I've arranged a tour of the State Capitol for 2 p. on Tuesday, April 14. We'll get to learn how a bill becomes law, see the chambers and find out more about the state's history. I think its also a great opportunity to build a stronger sense of citizenship. Who knows, it may even put one of these lads on a pathway into politics.

It is a school day. If everybody is in my driveway by 1:15 with their uniforms on - I'll probably send Christopher and Alex to school in theirs - then we will be in business. We can carpool like we did for the recycling center trip, and I'll look for volunteers in a few weeks.

Sunday's Den Meeting

Capitol Tour

We had a great meeting today, a little heavy on the crafts but we did learn how to generate electricity from windmills made out of office supplies. Yep, we aim to please.

Four announcements, real fast.

First, next Sunday is the Blue & Gold Banquet. The boys have worked hard on the decorations and we're looking forward to seeing everybody there. Everybody in Den Four has been asked to bring a salad with dressing. And don't forget the Dad & Lad cake bake.

Second, our next meeting is March 1 at the Anderson's house. Rael Francis is responsible for the snack, and Jack Wilson will be leading the flag ceremony. And don't forget to do your homework - each boy is doing a short report on the environmental contribution of a famous person. We drew names.

By the way, for today's game we created an aquaduct, using several short pieces of PVC to transport water from pitcher to bucket. Leaks and spills simply meant the boys had to die in Agony. It was quite dramatic.

The inaugural Den 4 flag football game, featuring the Ramblin' Wreynolds and the Hammerin' Hammonds, was a defensive struggle of monumental proportion and ended with a 7-0 score. And none of the old guys were injured, not seriously anyway.

For the trip to the Recycling Center, we are meeting at St. Peter and St. Paul at 3 p. - tour starts at 3:30 p., and it takes about a half hour to get there. Big thanks to our volunteer drivers. Remember, Class A for this trip.

Our next den meeting is 3:30 p. on Feb. 15 at the Eustons. Reynolds have the snack; Jack will lead the flag ceremony. Scout T-shirts are fine. Take some time to work on your requirements over the next couple of weeks, and we'll award more beads at this meeting.

And last, in addition to his considerable talents as all-time QB, Hammond Reynolds this weekend was inducted into the Silver Circle by the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences - the people who give out the Emmys. Silver Circle is like the Hall of Fame, recognizing 25 years of dedication and service to the industry. Congratulations Hammond.

What a great meeting yesterday. Big thanks to Mrs. Arasin and Mrs. Rogers for putting together a great lesson on nutrition and showing us that Super Bowl snacks can be healthy too! Also, it was a real treat to have so many Moms involved. Thanks for coming out, and feel free to join us for any meeting.

I've got a lot of announcements so please read all the way down - even you crackberry addicts. I need some responses. Don't be shy - write back.

First item. We finished three-fifths of Achievement 8 in our Den meeting yesterday. Please do parts 8c and 8d at home - that's have your son set the table, help prepare dinner and clean up afterwards; and prepare his own breakfast and clean up.

Next, on February 11, we have a field trip to Smyrna Recycling Center. We need to be there at 3:30 p.m., and this trip will help meet one of the requirements. I will be driving and have room for two non-Euston Cubs. I do need, however, another responsible adult or two to drive. Please let me know if you are able go, and if you can help out. Please plan on wearing your Class A uniform - that's the full blue one, with scarf.

On Feb. 22 at 4:30 p., we have our Blue and Gold Banquet. I haven't heard yet from everybody on who will be there and how many in your party. Please let me know. Each family will need to bring a fruit salad or green salad plus dressing. And don't forget the Father Son Cake Bake. This is also a Class A uniform event.

Scout Sunday is March 1 at 10:30 a. It's optional. Scouts from six kinds of Boy and Girl Scouts will be there because its a nice way to show our support for the church that supports us. Please let me know if you can attend. This is also a Class A uniform event.

Service Project Monday

You may have received a note this morning from Morey about participating in a service project at East Cobb Park. If you can make - it runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. - it would be good way to give back to the community. This is optional. I'm planning to go with the boys.

The plan is to sweep East Cobb Park, Fullers Park and the trail between them. If you plan to attend, meet at East Cobb Park; bring gloves and a trash bag.

Eagle Scout Court of Honor

Avery Arasin's cousin, Adam, will be awarded his Eagle Scout - Scouting's highest honor - next month in a traditional Court of Honor Ceremony. Only 2 percent of boys who join the Boy Scouts make it all the way to Eagle, so this is a real achievement.

Adam has invited our den to attend the ceremony on Sunday, February 8 at 3 p. at Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church in Roswell. It should last about 45 minutes. If you're interested in going, please reach out to Kim Arasin for details - arasin5@bellsouth.net.

Two things about the Blue & Gold Banquet

Our next Pack Meeting is Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2 p. at the church - same room as the derby. It's the annual Blue & Gold Banquet, which is Scouting's birthday party - Scouting in the US happens to be 100 years old this year - and annual Friends of Scouting event.

So the two things - First, we need to know if you plan to attend and how many people will be in your party. The whole family is invited. Eventually, you will be asked to bring a side dish. Please send me a note.

And Second, we are having the Father/Son Cake Bake again this year. Cakes can have a Scouting or Egyptian theme. Gentlemen! Start your mixers ...

Pinewood Derby Secrets

Now that he's comfortably at home polishing his Pinewood Derby Grand Champion trophy, Jack "Lightning McQueen" Wilson (and his Dad) agreed to share the secret of their success in this guest post. You're gonna want to bookmark this post for next year.

Hey Greg. Here is the website I followed while building our car. It lists 16 steps. The key steps I followed closely were:

Step 5 (but I didn’t countersink the weights. And speaking of countersinking the weights – I noticed numerous cars striking the track during the races, so I will never place weights under the car. I also saw advice on another site to put most, but not all, of the weights high and in the back),

Step 6 (I have a scale from Stamps.com that showed my car at 4.9 ounces. The official scale showed my car at 4.75 ounces, so I brought along and simply added enough weight to get the car at exactly 5.0 ounces),

Step 7 (excellent ideas for painting cars – note the use of fishing line),

Step 8 (KEY STEP. What I did different: put the nail in the drill and used a regular file to sand down the burr. Also, I used one grade of medium sandpaper soaked in water for 5 minutes, cut it into ¼ inch strips and spun the axle around it for two or three 15 second bursts. I didn’t see the need to go through all the sanding levels this guy lists. I almost skipped out on the car wax, but decided to do this the last minute – and it made a big difference. Again, didn’t do all of this guys suggestions. I applied the wax with a paper towel with the nail in the drill and then spun the axle with the drill and buffed using a dry washcloth),

Step 10 (used liberally),

Step 11 (mine spun from between 20 and 35 seconds),

Step 12 (note the “trick”),

Step 13,

And of course, see steps 1, 15 and 16

Steps 5, 6 and 8 made the difference from a car not winning a race last year to not losing a race this year. So, shhhhhh – keep this information a “Den 4 Exclusive” and will rule the Derby for YEARS. OK, getting a little crazy there, and besides, simple Google searches on Pinewood Derby will lead anyone to these tricks.

Pinewood Derby Registration on Saturday

In case you didn't see Greg Doherty's note, here are the highlights. Wolves - that's us - need to register their cars between 9:20 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. We will begin racing as close to 10:00 AM as possible.

Registration includes up to three test runs, inspection and registration. After the test runs, bring the car to the registration table where it will be measured, weighed and put into the pit area. Once it goes to the pit, it may not be touched by the Scout until his race heat and then placed back into the pit afterward. Everyone has the Official Rules by now, but if not, they are available at http://www.pack797.org.

We had a good meeting today - the rockets were a lot of fun, so a big Thank You to Keith Anderson. I also wanted to follow up with the several announcements. I'm sorry to say that you're going to have to read all the way to the bottom of the posting.

First, I've talked to a number of families who are excited to spend the night on the USS Yorktown in Charleston the weekend of March 13-15. But most have not turned in their money.

It's $55 per person, no matter the age. Families are welcome, but no children under the age of 6 can stay overnight on the boat. Please get your money in to Rebecca Woody by January 10 - that's Saturday. You can mail it to her, or hand deliver it to her at the Pinewood Derby.

The itinerary for Saturday, March 14 includes a full day on the boat, with a side tour, and spending the night on the boat itself. Ladies get the officers' quarters, gents will sleep in crew quarters. Return home on Sunday. Because it is a six hour drive to Charleston, we are planning to arrange a block of rooms at a nearby hotel for Friday night. We need to know how many people are going before we can do that. Stay tuned for more information.

Second, we plan to award Wolf badges at the April Pack Meeting. That means we all need to buckle down and get our achievements completed. Some boys are on track, others have some catching up to do. I will send individual notes to families outlining what their son needs to complete to catch up - not to finish, but to catch up.

Third, the Pinewood Derby is January 10. Racing begins at 10 a.m. (weigh-in should be before that) and should end around 1 p. with a pizza party. This is our Pack meeting in January.

Fourth, we are moving our next Den meeting forward one week, to Jan. 25 from Jan. 18. It will still be at the Eustons house. We will be preparing our snacks as our activity, and Rael Francis is responsible for leading the flag ceremony.

Fifth and last, our February 1 Den meeting will start one hour earlier - 2:30 p. rather than 3:30 p. so that we can end in time to catch plenty of Superbowl pre-game coverage.

Den Schedule for January

I hope everybody had a wonderful New Year's celebration last night. I wanted to remind you about Sunday's den meeting (Jan. 4, 3:30 p. at the Anderson's house) and to get your thoughts on the two meetings after that.

After Sunday, our next meeting is January 18. It happens to be in the middle of the three-day Martin Luther King weekend. Do you plan to be in town that weekend, or should we move it back a week to January 25?

And then the meeting after that is February 1, which is Super Bowl Sunday. Meeting should be done by 4:30 or 5 p. Kick off is at 6:20 p. There isn't technically a conflict, but not everybody thinks opening a bag of Doritos and a barley pop is sufficient to get ready for this particular game. Leave it on the 1st or move it back a week?

Three Holiday Ideas

The kids have all just started a long Winter Break, and I thought I would give you three ideas that might help keep them occupied for the time being. You know, for when they get tired of all that brand new stuff sometime around the 26th.

1. Say Thank You to a soldier. Xerox has a great site here where you can select a card, add a message and they will then send it to a random serviceman or woman serving overseas. It's a really cool idea and only takes a few minutes.

2. Work on your Pinewood Derby cars. The big race is January 10.

3. Do achievements 10, 11 and 12. We will not do these in the den meetings. Besides, achievement 10 is "Family Fun," and what's funner than this time of year!

Cub Scouts starts up again on Sunday, January 4 at the Anderson's house.

We have added an additional Den meeting on Nov. 30, at 3:30 p., at the Anderson's house. Carson is responsible for the snack, and Cole will lead the opening ceremony. Don't forget your collections.

We added the den meeting to make room for the two Pack activities on Dec. 7 and Dec. 14. Both are part of our promise to "help other people."

On Dec. 7, we'll help restore trails and other maintenance at the Mt. Bethel Habitat from 1 p. to 4 p. On Dec. 14, we will have our annual holiday caroling at Sunrise Senior Living Center, on Johnson Ferry Road near Roswell Road, just past Target. There will be additional details.

There is no Pack meeting in December. The next Pack meeting is January 10 - Pinewood Derby.

And with the holiday's approaching, it's a great time to do knock off some of the requirements at home. Please do Achievements 9a-c (about safety in the home), 10 (Family Fun), 11 (Faith) and 12 (Making Good Choices.) We certainly need to have all these done by April. And don't forget to log them into Scout Track.

Kangaroo Crossing

Hammond, who has established himself as the Den photographer, brought back these photos of some Cub Scouts and other wildlife at the Kangaroo Conservation Center trip on Nov. 1.

And this one got me humming, "if I could talk to the animals ..."

A Bird of Paradise, I believe, Hammond said. That, or a New York City pigeon after a night at Studio 54.

Fall Family Camping Fotos

Hammond Reynolds captured some great images at last month's camping trip at Bert Adams Scout Reservation.

The morning started with the pack turning out for the flag ceremony.

When the Blackhawk landed at the flag ceremony, well that was pretty darn cool.

And we got a briefing from the pilot.

Back at camp, the boys made firewood.

We also earned our Archery and BB gun shooting belt loops from trained instructors on proper ranges. (I just wanted assure the Moms that they didn't put me in charge of firearms and other sharp projectiles.)

In all the excitement of having so many hammers swinging in so many directions and not having a single injury - at least not any we want to tell Mom about - I forgot to mention a few things about the bird houses. If you plan to put it up in your yard, hang it on a tree or fence post 5 or 6 feet off the ground. Don't paint or stain the wood. And clean it out every fall.

Speaking of home maintenance, the next couple of weeks are a good time to do Achievements 9a-c, on page 82 of the Wolf Handbook. They deal with checking the house for safety and fire hazards and talking about why its important to be safe.

Upcoming activities. On Nov. 8, please pick up your popcorn at the Church between 10:30 a. and 2 p.m.

Our next Den meeting is Nov. 16, at 3:30 p.m. Since its the day before a Pack meeting, wear your Class B t-shirts. The meeting is at the Euston's house, Arasin is responsible for the snack (a swap with Francis), and Hawley is responsible for leading the flag ceremony.

Our next Pack meeting is Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at SPSP Church. Plan on wearing your "Class A" uniform - that's the traditional blue uniform with all the patches on it.

Into the Swing of Things

What a great camping trip! (It's taken me a whole week just to recover.) What was your favorite part? I liked the fact that the boys had plenty of time to be silly, and still managed to accomplish a few things. You may not have known it, but we earned a few electives - being in a skit and camping skills - a couple of achievement parts at the flag ceremony, and belt loops for Archery and BB Gun shooting. Enormous thanks go to Rebecca Woody for running a comfortable camp, and to everybody who pitched in to help. If you have any pictures you want to share, I'm sure I can figure out a way to post them here.

We've also got a lot of great stuff coming up too. Of course, Monday night is the Pack meeting and Raingutter Regatta. Bring your best boat and your best wind! And Saturday, Nov. 1 is the trip to the Kangaroo Conservation Center. You will have already signed up if you're going.

Our next Den meeting is Nov. 2 at the Eustons. There's a map to our house in the lefthand column. We're building Bluebird houses. I would appreciate it if parents can plan to stay for the whole meetings to work with their son on this project. Also, if you have a hammer, please bring it. Feel free to wear your new "Class B" uniform, which is Scouting talk for the Pack T-shirt we handed out last weekend. (I have Rael's.) Pack Dues

In the fall of 2007, when you signed up for Cub Scouts, the Pack asked you to pay $60 in dues. The dues cover Pack costs, Boy Scouts of America fees and a subscription to Boys Life.

As Wolves, we have not yet asked for dues. It's that time. The dues remain $60 and cover the same things as they have in the past. Please bring a check, made out to Pack 797, to the next Den meeting, on Nov. 2.

Popcorn Selling Opportunity

The Pack has just scheduled a "Show and Sell" event for this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 1-4 p. at the so-called Stinky Kroger. I know its late notice, but we would love to be able to give some of our boys a chance to fill up their sheet in a quick and painless way and earn credit toward prizes.

You do not have to attend the whole time, but we are scheduling slots. Please send a note to Ethan Milley, Ethan.Milley@am.jll.com, if you are interested in participating.

What is Show and Sell? The pack sets up a table in front of the Kroger doors so the boys can sell popcorn directly to grocery customers. Money is collected and popcorn is delivered in the same transaction. The boys get credit (toward prizes) for the sales they make. You have probably bought Girl Scout cookies this way.

Got your attention, didn't I? I just wanted to remind you about the den meeting on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Fire Station #21, on Lower Roswell Road across from the Mt. Bethel church. The meeting is at 3:30 p. at the usual time. Please wear your Class A uniform - the official one. I will not be there - I'm out of town - but Keith Anderson will be.

This is the only actual den meeting we have in October, but we'll meet again at the camping trip and the Pack meeting.

And a few reminders. We must have medical forms filled out and signed for everybody - man, woman and child - who is going to the Fall Family Camping on the 17th to 19th. The form is here. The trip promises to be a great one - 73 people - cubs, parents and siblings are going.

The next Pack meeting is October 27. It is the Raingutter Regatta - balsa wood boats racing down a rain gutter. You need to get your own boat at the Scout Store.

And at the last meeting, I assigned homework. It's achievement 4e - start doing a chore around the house. It's one of my favorites.

The Pack is taking inventory of the number of parents who have a current CPR certification. Apparently, we're concerned that the Pack Committee Chairman eats at Chick-fil-a a little too much. Anyway, it doesn't have to be a BSA certification, it could be Red Cross or another organization. Please drop me a note if you have one, and which organization it's with.

Upcoming Pack Events

I wanted to send out a quick note on the next three Pack events.

First up, on Sept. 20, is the East Cobber Parade. Look for some additional details in your email box soon. It leaves from the Mt. Bethel Elementary School parking lot.

Next is the Fall Family Camping on Oct. 17-19. This is fun for the whole family - moms, dads and siblings too. It's $10 for each boy, and $10 for each sibling who comes out. Money and number of family members attending are due to Rebecca Woody by Sept. 25. You can give it to me at the next Den Meeting, Sept. 21, or turn it in at the next Pack meeting, Sept. 22. Or you can give it directly to Rebecca at your convenience.

We will handle food (shopping and cooking) as a pack. There will be an additional per person charge for food, once we know the head count. Please plan on having your own camping gear - sleeping bags, tents and basic camping supplies. Let me know if you need a tent - we can probably borrow one.

We also need a completed medical form. Get the form here if you didn't get one today.

And who knew the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia was in Dawsonville, Ga. If you're planning to come out for the Kangaroo Conservation Center trip, on Nov. 1, money and number of attending is due to Rebecca Woody by Oct. 1. The trip - Guided Tour and Aussie Adventure - is $23.50 per person. We start at 10:15 in the morning, and it lasts between two and three hours. The whole family is invited, but unfortunately all attendees must be at least 6 years old, or older.

A Red Hot Start

We're off to a red hot start in Den Four this year. First, I want to welcome Jack Wilson to our den. We're all glad that Jack and his dad Todd could make it. And second, a big thank you to Melissa Anderson, who used her many years of medical training to teach the boys some basic first aid. Nobody was (actually) injured in the making of this den meeting!

Keith Anderson and I are working on an fun and exciting program for the year, with the goal of making sure everybody earns their Wolf badges no later than April. We're going to tackle most - but not all - of the achievements and several electives in the den meetings. So like last year, there will be homework for you and your boys.

Right off the bat, there are three achievements that each family should plan on doing at home this year. They are Achievement 10 - Family Fun; Achievement 11 - Duty to God; and Achievement 12 - Making Choices. You have all year.

And some special homework for Avery Arasin. Avery, please plan to lead the opening flag ceremony at the next Den Meeting, on Sept. 21. See Achievement 2b in your Wolf Handbook for some ideas. Each boy will have a chance to lead the flag ceremony this year, and we'll be learning other stuff about the American and state flags too.

Out next Den Meeting is Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. We will meet at the sports field at Dickerson Middle School for our very own version of the Olympic games. Euston is responsible for snack. Everybody please wear a Cub Scout t-shirt. See you then.

No sooner do I publish a den meeting schedule than I have to let you know about the first change. I got concerned about this weekend's weather and decided to move our meeting indoors. The Andersons are going to host. We'll meet Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3:30 pm, as usual. And here's a map for their house. See you there.

When I get a complete calendar for the Den meetings squared away, I'll do the same thing with that.

Welcome Back

I'm looking forward to a great new year of Cub Scouts and I hope that you are too. Keith Anderson, who stepped up as Asst. Den Leader, and I are planning a great year. We have tools, fire trucks, secret codes and nature. And the Pack has a great program too. It includes two camping trips and a visit to the USS Yorktown in Charleston.

I got a little excited and created this blog. I am hoping to reduce the number of emails I send - reminders and whatnot - by posting everything in one place. You can send messages back to me, add comments and I'll be able to post digital pictures.

Right now, I've got two dates for you to remember.

The first is the Aug. 25 at 6:30 p. It's the first Pack meeting, and its at the usual place at St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church.

The second is Sept. 7 at 3 p. It's the first den meeting, and its at my house - 4875 Lanbrook Court, just off Little Willeo. It will last about an hour. While the boys are working on their activity - our very own version of the Olympics - we'll have a short parents meeting. Plan on filling out the medical form. No swimming is planned.

Welcome to the Den 4 blog. I thought writing a blog would be fun, and would give the whole Den a single place where you can get the latest updates on what we are doing and what we did. If I get any good at this, I'll also post some useful information such as key links and where patches go on the uniform.
